Eddie Murphy chops some fools in Dolemite is My Name trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Eddie Murphy hasn’t had much of a screen presence over the recent years, taking some time off and focusing on only a handful of small projects. But the man is back and chopping every fool around in the first trailer for his new starring vehicle, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, where he plays Rudy Ray Moore, the creator of the comedy and blaxploitation sensation, Dolemite.

The story covers the struggles of Moore, who spent years cultivating all sorts of acts as a way of trying to make it big in show business. Soon, he decided to create the pimp character named Dolemite, and turn him into a comedy act and eventually a star of blaxploitation movies. The last two decades have seen Murphy starring in movies that have, let's say, not utilized the best of his talents (sans his Oscar-nominated work in DREAMGIRLS), but DOLEMITE seems to turn that all around and find Murphy both at some of his most sensitive and hilarious.

Directed by Craig Brewer (HUSTLE & FLOW), the movie will have its premiere next month at TIFF before getting a limited, awards-qualifying release this fall, and then being put on Netflix for all to see. Netflix also dropped some new images, which you can see below. Murphy may be leading the charge, but an incredible cast fleshes out the ensemble including Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Titus Burgess, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Epps, Luenell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Snoop Dogg and Chris Rock.
