Emma Stone & Jonah Hill enter a world of neon in first-look pics for Maniac

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

This afternoon Netflix released a collection of first-look photos for their upcoming dark comedy series MANIAC. Helming the remake of the Norwegian program of the same name is JANE EYRE, TRUE DETECTIVE and BEASTS OF NO NATION director Cary Fukunaga. Set to star in the 10-episode presentation are Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, who co-starred together in director Greg Mottola's raunchy 2007 coming-of-age comedy SUPERBAD. Co-starring alongside Stone and Hill for the dark and psychedelic series are Sonoya Mizuno, Justin Theroux, Julia Garner, Jemima Kirke and Sally Field.

In MANIAC, two strangers find themselves caught up in a bizarre pharmaceutical trial gone awry. According to Inverse Entertainment, the Norwegian version of the show show snaps back and forth between a patient in a mental asylum and his internal, shape-shifting fantasy world. In real life, Espen (Hill) is a catatonic schlub, he is — among many other things — wealthy, fashionable, and beloved as the hero of his imagined universe. Sometimes, he resides in a mansion with bikini-clad women as attendants; at other times, he’s a star football player, war hero, special agent, and cowboy.

Whether or not Fukunaga's version will follow the same plot as the Norwegian original has yet to be seen, though in the meantime you can take a gander at this gallery of first-look photos from the upcoming series:

MANIAC, written by Patrick Somerville and directed by Cary Fukunaga will appear on Netflix later this year.
