God of War TV series being considered by Prime Video

God of War, TV series, Prime Video

After years of sub-par video-game movies, it would seem that we’re on the verge of seeing the medium try its luck on television instead. Deadline has reported that Prime Video is in negotiations to develop a TV series based on PlayStation’s highly successful God of War franchise.

The God of War TV series is being developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, creators and executive producers of The Expanse, as well as Rafe Judkins, showrunner/executive producer of The Wheel of Time. The video-game series follows a Spartan warrior named Kratos who is tricked by Ares, the God of War, into killing his family. He sets off on a journey of vengeance that ends with him becoming the new God of War. Subsequent games found Kratos facing off against a variety of other gods and mythological beings, with the latest installment shifting the focus to Norse mythology instead.

I mentioned above that there are more than a few TV series based on popular video-game franchises in various stages of development. It was recently announced that Peacock gave a series order to Twisted Metal with Anthony Mackie starring and producing. Based on an original take by Deadpool and Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Twisted Metal will revolve around “a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.” HBO has also been developing an adaptation of The Last of Us starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey; Netflix has a new Resident Evil TV series in the works; and Paramount+ will launch the long-awaited Halo TV series on March 24th. The next installment of the video-game franchise, God of War Ragnarök, will be released on PS4 and PS5 later this year.
