Guillermo del Toro is as busy as ever. His latest movie, a stop-motion animated take on Pinocchio, is set to be released through the Netflix streaming service this Friday. He’s considering making his long-awaited H.P. Lovecraft adaptation At the Mountains of Madness as a stop-motion feature. He’s hoping to produce another season of the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities for Netflix (if Netflix decides to renew the show). And during an interview with the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, he revealed that he’s currently developing a monster movie… which may end up being his next directing project.

Del Toro said (with thanks to The Playlist for the transcript), “I’m working on a monster movie; I cannot say the title because it may change, and I could end up making something else. But right now, I’m writing and designing. And we have for the last couple of years. Hopefully, it’ll be next, but anything can happen.

It’s no surprise to hear that del Toro is hoping and planning to make a monster movie as his next feature, since most of his movies have had monsters of some sort in them. But it’s nice to know we might have another del Toro monster movie to watch sometime in the near future.

Guillermo del Toro made his feature directorial debut with the unique vampire movie Cronos in 1993. Since then he was brought us mutated cockroaches in Mimic, the ghost story The Devil’s Backbone, the vampire action movie Blade II, Hellboy himself and various other creatures in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the fantasy world creatures of Pan’s Labyrinth, the giant monsters of Pacific Rim, the viral vampires of The Strain, the haunted house movie Crimson Peak, the Gillman of Best Picture winner The Shape of Water (which also earned him the Best Director Oscar), animated trolls in the Trollhunter series, and the downbeat carnival story Nightmare Alley. That’s not even counting the stuff he has produced but didn’t direct.
