More casting news for IRON MAN 3 today as Guy Pearce as entered the running for a role in the sequel.  According to Variety, Pearce would play the role of Alrich Killian, a genetecist working on a technology known as “extremis.”  Comic fans will recognize this from the mini-series, Iron Man: Extremis by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov.  It was Granov’s artwork that inspired the look of Iron Man in the first film.

Director Shane Black (KISS KISS, BANG BANG) is said to be loosely adapting the extremis storyline for the sequel, which served as a kind of reboot for Tony Stark/Iron Man in the comics world.  It’s a very self-contained story, meaning that if they are following this story then it falls in line with everything that’s been said about making this all about Stark and having a very miniscule involvement with the rest of the Marvel U.  It’s definitely not a crossover story and very much about the character of Iron Man.

Pearce would be joining Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and the recently announced Ben Kingsley as the film’s main villain.

IRON MAN 3 begins filming in just over a month and will hit theaters on May 3, 2013.
