Halloween Ends: John Carpenter describes upcoming sequel as a departure from the other films

Our own Chris Bumbray got to see a trailer for director David Gordon Green’s upcoming Halloween sequel Halloween Ends – introduced by Jamie Lee Curtis, no less – at CinemaCon way back in April. He said that trailer featured a “super violent, gory” confrontation between masked slasher Michael Myers and franchise heroine Laurie Strode… which doesn’t sound like anything new for the series, but franchise creator John Carpenter says Halloween Ends will be something a little different. While speaking with Syfy Wire, Carpenter was asked about the new film, and this is what he had to say:

Well, it’s Halloween, and it ends. You’ll see it’s a departure from the others. It’s interesting. Dave is a really good director. I love working with him.”

Carpenter isn’t the first to suggest that Halloween Ends goes in a different direction. Nick Castle, who played Michael Myers in the original Halloween and has cameos in the Green trilogy, recently said the film has a

surprising storyline and ending for everyone. It’s absolutely something I don’t think you would have ever guessed, in terms of the way it’s going to unroll.”

Green, who was also at the helm of Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills, directed Halloween Ends from a screenplay he wrote with Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier. He has confirmed that the events of this sequel take place four years after the ending of Halloween Kills, and also said,

There’s not a lot of games in it, there’s not a lot of wittiness and retro joy. It’s kind of a coming-of-age film, and it’s a very different tone. And that’s what excited me about it, is to have the three chapters that I’ve been involved in be very different from each other.”

Curtis is joined in the cast by Andi Matichak as Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson, Kyle Richards as Lindsey Wallace, and Michael O’Leary as Doctor Mathis. James Jude Courtney reprises the role of Michael Myers.

casting call gave descriptions of more characters:

Among them are a self-assured nurse named Erin who is between the ages of 28 and 35 and is very judgmental, as well as a Proprietor between the ages of 40 and 80 years old. Other roles being cast for the film are Scott, Donna, Mr. Meade and Mrs. Meade.

Per the breakdowns, Scott is a male between the ages of 52 and 57; he is stern, strong and a straight shooter who is sometimes checked out. While Donna is a 55 to 65 year old female who is Timothy’s overbearing and critical mother. Mr. Meade and Mrs. Meade are the parents to a young boy named Noah who is a nice kid with the ability to switch to a jerk on a dime. Both Mr. and Mrs. Meade are described as being between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. They’re a middle-class suburban family, with the father being described as “tough as nails” and the mother said to showcase “emotional depth.”

Other roles being cast are Brandon, Young Johnny and Veronica. Brandon is a male between the ages of 40 and 60. He is a large man in weight and sense of authority who finds his son to be a disappointment. Young Johnny is a male between the ages of 6 and 10 who has long blonde hair with a slight gap between his teeth; the character is described as having dark eyes being a bit small. Veronica is the last of the trio. She’s between the ages of 40 and 45 and is a strong-willed protective wife who is broken “by the reminders of tragedy.”

As he did for the previous two movies, Carpenter is composing the score for Halloween Ends with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.

Halloween Ends is scheduled to reach theatres on October 14, 2022. Are you looking forward to the movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
