Kit Harington replacing Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2 of HBO’s Harry Potter series

Kit Harington is trading his sword for a wand after joining HBO‘s Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart. The former Game of Thrones star replaces Nicholas Hoult, who was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Why Hoult Dropped Out

While Gilderoy Lockhart doesn’t enter the picture until Season 2, HBO is planning to make sure one of its biggest productions in history avoids as many pitfalls as possible. When Hoult took the job, HBO had to work around two pre-existing projects involving Hoult. After mapping out the shooting schedule for Lockhart’s scenes, Hoult’s reps said his participation was no longer in the cards. Thankfully, Kit Harington was more than ready to step in and cast a spell as the smarmy sorcerer.

Interestingly, Harington is already familiar with Gilderoy Lockhart, after voicing him in the star-studded Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions released late last year. “I read it, and like so many generations, I was entranced, and then I was a huge fan all through my teenage years,” Harington said about his experience with the Harry Potter novels.

Who Is Gilderoy Lockhart?

Gilderoy Lockhart plays a significant role in the second Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Kenneth Branagh played Lockhart in the second movie. He’s a flamboyant, pathologically narcissistic celebrity author who briefly takes over as Hogwarts’ Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Dressed in tailored, peacock-bright robes with wave-styled blonde hair and a dazzling five-time Witch Weekly’s Most-Charming-Smile-Award-winning grin, Lockhart presents himself as a heroic master of magical combat. He feeds off the idolatry of his readership, plastering his own face across signed portraits and assigning his self-aggrandizing autobiographies as required reading. Yet beneath the shimmering theatricality lies a fundamentally inept wizard whose magical skill rarely extends beyond basic hygiene charms and vanity spells. Ultimately, he’s a fraud with a knack for perfecting Memory Charms. Don’t trust him!
