Following in Leo D’s footsteps, Emile Hirsch and Catherine Hardwicke have decided to team up to do a modernized adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In the film, Hirsch will star as the titular tortured youngster who must decide whether to kill his uncle in order to avenge his father’s death. Producers say they aim to “present the story as a suspense thriller. We want to make it exciting and accessible for an audience today.” Because that’s worked out so well in the past. It’s unclear whether the idea is to make a true adaptation with Shakespearean language a la Leo D’s ROMEO & JULIET or whether it’s just the story with a modern-day setting a la the Julia Stiles starring O. Either one should work great, though, right? Hirsch can next be seen in the Ang Lee directed dramedy TAKING WOODSTOCK and Hardwicke will next be directing the action adventure sci fi thriller MAXIMUM RIDE.
