It’s been almost two decades since Lily and Lana Wachowski’s Speed Racer dazzled audiences with outrageous effects and a wholesome approach to a time-honored character. To mark the occasion, the cult classic film got a gorgeous 4K special edition digital and Blu-ray release, and the film has never looked better! While promoting the new release, we spoke with Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch about piloting the Mach 5, working alongside the film’s star-studded cast, and more!

During our chat, Emile reflected on his fondest memory from Speed Racer‘s production while sharing what he learned along the way. He also takes time to explain the intricate set design and working with a mostly green-and-blue screen. Emile also takes time to shout out the Wachowskis and how their brilliant film helped catapult his career, leading to a series of unique opportunities. Finally, Emile discusses the thrill of working with actors like John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Kick Gurry, and the diabolical Roger Allam.

In Speed Racer, a young driver aspires to become the world champion with the help of his family and his high-tech Mach 5.

I had the pleasure of watching the 4K version of Speed Racer in my friend’s at-home theater, and it looked tremendous! Brad’s (my friend) theater is impressive. It’s got a massive screen, blackout curtains, Dolby Surround Sound, rumble seats, and more. He’d never seen Speed Racer before, and I knew he would enjoy it. The movie holds up surprisingly well after nearly 20 years. It’s a tad hokey in the beginning, but once it finds its comfort zone (about 20 minutes in), it’s off to the races! The whole film looks as if the team updated it with care. The colors are super vibrant, the audio design is fantastic for surround sound, and the overall presentation is still as charming as it was back in the day. I’ve been a Speed Racer defender since its release, and I’m happy to say the new 4K version is the ultimate way to rewatch this fun, effects-driven film. Be sure to check it out!
