A Ghostbusters movie is off the table for the Russo brothers

The 2014 Sony hack unearthed discussions of a GHOSTBUSTERS project that would co-exist with the reboot that has been directed by Paul Feig. A project that would be produced by CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER / CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR directors Joe and Anthony Russo, with Channing Tatum on board to play one of the Ghostbusters and hopes that Chris Pratt would join him.

Sony is indeed working on building a Ghostbusters Cinematic Universe with films focusing on more than just the team that Feig has put together (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones). Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd are behind a production company called Ghost Corps that was formed solely to create GHOSTBUSTERS projects. But even though the trades continue to reference the Tatum/Russo brothers GHOSTBUSTERS as being in the works, quotes from those involved point to this specific idea being dead in the water.

First, Tatum was quoted as saying "We're not doing that anymore … it's too complicated." If that wasn't enough to kill your hopes for this one, the Russos – who have been recruited by Marvel to follow up their two CAPTAIN AMERICA films by directing the epic two-part AVENGERS sequel INFINITY WAR – have said that they'll be too busy assembling the Avengers to assemble any Ghostbusters.

There is no status with that for us. There was a period there when Paul Feig was engaging Sony in talks about Ghostbusters and we were also engaging them. He was further along with his process than we were and he closed his deal so that’s the only Ghostbusters world that’s being explored right now over at Sony. Once we took Infinity War it too us off the table for any kind of any potential work on a Ghostbusters project."

The Russos/Tatum GHOSTBUSTERS may be toast, but Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS will be reaching theatres on July 15th and Fletcher Moules has signed on to direct an animated GHOSTBUSTERS film.
