Andy Muschietti isn’t a fan of the 1990 IT miniseries

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Recently I asked one of my buddies what his favorite horror movies of all time were. The top one that popped into his head was IT (1990). Now, this guy is not a huge horror guy and loves all types of movies. So I asked him why. He said it was just so damn scary.

Fair enough.

That said, I'm thinking it might be because the new adaptation is coming our way soon that the original Tommy Lee Wallace mini-series was at the front of his mind. I love the (kid parts) of the mini-series dearly, but it is not that good, truthfully. Like at all.

However you personally feel about the 1990 mini-series is all good – in the end I call myself a big fan as I own it on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray – but what does the director of the upcoming feature adaptation of STEPHEN KING'S IT think of the mini-series?

Andy Muschietti on IT (1990):

To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of the miniseries. I was not a child anymore when it came out in 1990. So my attachment was very much to the book and to the world of Stephen King more than the miniseries.

Muschietti continues:

I totally acknowledge how iconic that miniseries was for a generation. But also you have to say that it impacted that generation because they saw it with very young eyes as a TV movie or on VHS. A lot of people don’t remember the whole thing, but they are terrified of the iconic scenes of the clown behind the sheets in the beginning and the storm drain.

Well phooey on you then, Muschiettit. But whatever, I've always wondered what Stephen King thought of the original ABC mini-series and turns out he dropped some thoughts on it back in 2015 with Yahoo.

Stephen King on IT (1990):

The series really surprised me by how good it was. It’s a really ambitious adaptation of a really long book. The kid actors were good, and the adult actors were terrific. There’s an earlier generation who remember watching Salem’s Lot on TV, and then there are the kids who remember seeing It. Get ‘em while they’re young, that’s my motto.
