Grudge reboot moved to January 2020

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

Writer-director Nicolas Pesce's (THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, PIERCING) upcoming reimagining of THE GRUDGE, which is simply going by the clean-cut title GRUDGE has finished shooting with a killer cast which includes Lin Shaye, John Cho, Demian Bichir, and Andrea Riseborough.

The new movie was all set to hit on August 16, 2019, but was moved up a couple months to June 21, 2019, late last year. And now it looks like the movie is getting yet another release date shuffle as today Deadline reports that the reboot has been pushed out of 2019 altogether and will now be creeping and crawling into your local multiplex come January 2020. I'm looking forward to the movie and I can wait for its release due to the fact that Shaye has said the movie is the scariest film she has ever worked on.

Specifically, Lin Shaye said back in October:

Wait until you see this. It's the scariest movie I've ever been a part of, not even maybe. Not even maybe. And it's the scariest part I've ever had, bar none. I think it comes out next August, I'm very excited about it. The horror fans are going to go insane, that I can promise.

What will make it really different is Nicolas Pesce, who is the writer/director, who is extraordinary. I mean he's a real visionary. I had a phenomenal time working with him. He was very open to my ideas, which he told me he never is. He said, 'I don't usually let actors do what they want.' He said, 'But in your case, there were no rules.' I was inspired. The ideas I came up with were inspired by what he was creating. And he acknowledged that and allowed it.

Sounds good to me!

For those keeping score at home, January 2020 is also when director Mike Flanagan's THE SHINING sequel DOCTOR SLEEP, based on the novel by Stephen King, is all set to hit theaters. So I guess we'll have our fill of horror come January 2020. And that makes more than a bit of sense considering how well horror does in January. After all, just this past month ESCAPE ROOM scored big bucks at the box office and it's probably not a stretch to say that the movie wouldn't have been as big had it opened elsewhere in the year.

Anyhow, make sure to adjust your calendars as GRUDGE now crawls into theaters on January 3, 2020. How excited are you? Let us know below!
