Mortal Kombat cast new Liu Kang

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Producer James Wan and director Simon McQuoid's live-action adaptation of MORTAL KOMBAT is set to begin shooting in Adelaide later this year, where it will be the biggest production in South Australia’s state history.

And today we've learned that Chinese-Canadian actor Ludi Lin is in negotiations to play Liu Kang in the upcoming live-action film. While my kids have made damn-sure I know Lin as the black ranger in that recent POWER RANGERS movie, most of you might know him better for his (ironically spot-on) work in a MORTAL KOMBAT-style game in the recent BLACK MIRROR episode "Striking Vipers" (see above).

Personally, I remember watching that episode and thinking, "Wow, this episode is super-homoerotic." Not that, you know, there's anything wrong with that. And then thinking, "that one dude would make a killer Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat." True story.

Anyways… This news comes on the heels of THE RAID star Joe Taslim joining the cast as Sub-Zero!

Meanwhile, the character of Liu Kang was one of the seven original characters introduced in the first Mortal Kombat game and will (likely) be the main character of his new take on the game, which supposedly centers on

a male protagonist who becomes drawn into the interdimensional tournament, and who begins to realize his true potential as a result of the experience.

MORTAL KOMBAT will be the feature directorial debut for award-winning commercial director Simon McQuoid, who will be working from a screenplay written by Greg Russo based on the video game franchise. Wan is producing the film with Todd Garner. Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins serve as executive producers. The flick is currently in pre-production and is set to begin filming in Australia on September 16th before being unleashed in a theater near you on March 5, 2021. How excited are YOU?
