We have been inundated with so many true-crime series that it can sometimes be a challenge to appreciate the intensity of a fictional serial-killer drama. The new series Furious takes a chilling murder plot and turns it into a layered character drama about a woman out for revenge and the law enforcement officers trying to stop her. Presenting both sides of the story in a way that blurs the lines between good and evil, Furious is an impressively intricate new series from Elizabeth Meriwether, the creator of the beloved sitcom New Girl and the drama Dying for Sex.
Furious follows an FBI agent, Alice Black, who is on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer. Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur. Combining efforts between the NYPD and the FBI, the series shows us the lives of both the investigators and the suspect, and reveals that the motivations behind the heinous crimes are more complex than anyone could expect.
I got the chance to discuss Furious with the stars and creator of the series. Scoot McNairy talked about how playing an NYPD detective differed from his prior experience playing law enforcement, while Quincy Tyler Bernstine explored the challenges in portraying an FBI agent who has seen the most horrifying crimes imaginable. Jake Lacy talked about the gray area of playing Marshall, and how his past actions have caused a rift between him and Alice, and what that means for the story. Lola Petticrew discussed how playing their character was like being a chameleon, and which of the personas they used was the most difficult. Emmy Rossum talked about the toughest parts of playing Alice, both in pursuit of a killer and in her own mental state, while creator and writer Elizabeth Meriwether reflected on how she embedded humor and comedic actors in such a dark and serious series.
