The hits just keep on comin' today! It's almost like Hollywood is trying to unload all of their big news before everyone takes the day off for this year's Fourth of July celebration. Such as that being the case, it's been announced that Andy Muschietti, the in-demand filmmaker behind the box office barn burner IT and the upcoming IT: CHAPTER TWO, is in talks to direct a major motion picture featuring the DC Comics superhero, The Flash. In line to help produce the long-gestating project for DC is Andy's partner and sister, Barbara Muschietti, with Michael Disco also producing.
Before you even ask, yes, Ezra Miller is so far set to reprise his role as the Fastest Man Alive for the film, which has BUMBLEBEE and BIRDS OF PREY writer Christina Hodson on board to pen the script.
While a deal has yet to be struck, The Hollywood Reporter – who exclusively broke the news about Muschietti being eyed for the gig – says that official offers are expected to be made in due time.
For a time, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote versions of the script and were expected to direct, have since moved on from the project. It's to be understood by several reputable sources that Daley and Goldstein left the pic amicably, even after being attached to the film since January of 2018. Since then, work on The Flash screenplay hit another bump in the road when a draft co-written by Ezra Miller and comic book legend Grant Morrison was also scrapped.
Much of the reason as to why the Flash movie project has remained in limbo for so long is that no one can decide what sort of tone the film should carry. Even the Miller and Morrison draft was denied, and if anyone knows the Barry Allen Flash character, it's Grant frickin' Morrison. It's my guess that their version was "way out there," as Morrison tends to explore the fantastic and far-reaching when serving up a superhero epic. Perhaps DC just wasn't pickin' up what Miller and Morrison were puttin' down, which I think is a damn shame.
For now, we'll just have to hope that Muschietti's involvement with the project sticks, as I personally think that he's a perfect fit for the character.
