IT producer praises Ari Aster’s “brilliant” Midsommar

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

HEREDITARY writer/director Ari Aster's new nightmare MIDSOMMAR hit theaters near you this past week. Described as an "apocalyptic breakup," "Scandinavian folk horror" tale along the lines of THE WICKER MAN – and simply, "WIZARD OF OZ for perverts" – MIDSOMMAR has been snatching up positive word of mouth left and right. And today we have word that IT and IT: CHAPTER TWO producer Barbara Muschietti (see above with Stephen King and brother/director Andy Muschietti) found the flick to be brilliant and took to Instagram to share her enthusiasm, writing:

Brilliant, brilliant Ari Aster, thank you for this jewel. Midsommar. Do yourself a favor and go see it this weekend, even if you have to cover your eyes here and there.

This praise comes on the heels of US and GET OUT writer-director Jordan Peele who threw praise the movie's way a month or so ago, saying he loved it, particularly for its "atrociously disturbing imagery." Specifically, Peele said:

… After it ended, I found myself looking back at the final act like, “Holy s???.” That was some of the most atrociously disturbing imagery I’ve ever seen on film… Anything after Midsommar is going to have to contend with it. I mean, this usurps The Wicker Man as the most iconic pagan movie to be referenced.

Rated R for "disturbing ritualistic violence and grisly images, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and language," MIDSOMMAR stars Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe and follows the tale of

a teenage guy who wants to break up with his girlfriend, however, holds off after a personal tragedy. This emotional build-up happens to be occurring as both are headed to a crazy 9-day festival, which only happens every 90 years, a Swedish-puritan type celebration of love and glee — with some horrific results.
