Jim Carrey is Dr. Robotnik in new Sonic The Hedgehog featurette

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

While I respect the Hell out of Jim Carrey's career, there's no denying that the last decade or so has been a bit of a rough patch for the erstwhile comedian. Aside from KICK-ASS 2 and his starring role on Showtime's Kidding, most of his catalog has been severely wanting. In fact it's been two years since his last starring vehicle, the poorly received detective drama DARK CRIMES, which currently holds a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Yup. It's been a hot minute since ACE VENTURA: WHEN NATURE CALLS.

However, all of that is soon about to change as this week marks the return of Jim Carrey to the big screen with the videogame adaptation SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. The film will follow the exploits of the titular anthropomorphic blue hedgehog from another world, who seeks to evade capture from those looking to harness his super speed. Sonic's chief rival is of course the nefarious Dr. Robotnik, who seeks to capture Sonic's speed and take over the world.

In anticipation of Friday's release, Paramount Pictures just unveiled the featurette shown above which details Jim Carrey's transformation into Dr. Robotnik. From all appearances it looks like Jim Carrey went full Jim Carrey from THE MASK for this one. The overexaggerated gestures, the loud exclamations, the facial contortions – they are all here. This is the 90s Jim Carrey that I grew up with. Plus how can you not love that mustache??!!

Honestly, it's nice to see Jim Carrey fully unleashed with this one. As much as I admire his dramatic work in films like THE TRUMAN SHOW and THE MAJESTIC, he will forever be the one who can talk out of his butt. Carrey's antics in films like BATMAN FOREVER, LIAR, LIAR and DUMB AND DUMBER, clearly captured the zeitgeist of the time. Here's hoping that Carrey recaptures some of that magic with SONIC THE HEDGEHOG.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG starring Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter races its way into theaters this Friday February 14.
