Joe Johnston to helm Harry Potter-inspired Lumen pilot for TNT

With TNT's Falling Skies entering its fifth and final season sometime next summer, it looks as though TNT is looking to fill that fantasy void right away. That brings us to Lumen, which from the sound of it, is just a hop, skip and a jump away from the Harry Potter universe. Tapped to direct the pilot is a man who has more than enough experience crafting popcorn entertainment for the whole family, Joe Johnston (CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, THE ROCKETEER).

The synopsis, courtesy of Deadline:

Lumen centers on the famous author of a best-selling series of fantasy books who suddenly disappears, and a family of four finds themselves transported to the mystical alternate world that inspired her work. Once there, they are plunged into the middle of a war raging between rival magical forces, of light and darkness. Facing peril at every turn, the family must unravel a complicated mystery and uncover some astonishing secrets as they struggle to find their way home.

In the wake of the Harry Potter films, I'm actually surprised nothing of that sort has hit television sooner. This plot synopsis is actually pretty clever, in that it takes a supposedly fictional Potter-esque series and asks "What if you could actually wander around inside it?" I'm sure most folks would jump at the chance to go to Hogwarts and get scolded by Alan Rickman (that was his character's name, right?). Granted this isn't actually the Potter universe, but the parallel is definitely there. With TV shows pulling in more high-profile directors these days, that can only mean higher standards set for future series endeavors. Sounds great to me!
