Drew Hancock got his start in the entertainment industry by writing episodes of Supah Ninjas, Blue Mountain State, Fred: The Show, Suburgatory, Faking It, Mr. Pickles, and My Dead Ex (which he co-created), as well as the movie Fred 3: Camp Fred. He also directed episodes of Acceptable TV and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, as well as a Tenacious D music video. When he wrote the screenplay for the sci-fi horror film Companion, Zach Cregger was so impressed by it that he considered making the film his directorial follow-up to Barbarian. Instead, Hancock made his feature directorial debut with Companion while Cregger focused on Weapons – and while Companion didn’t do much at the box office, it has opened the door for Hancock to set up more projects. He’s writing a remake of The Faculty, and The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Lily James (Baby Driver) has signed on to star in his next directorial effort, a supernatural horror thriller called Seasons.

What is Seasons about?

Announced two years ago under the title My Wife and I Bought a Ranch, Seasons is based on a short story by Matt Query that first appeared on Reddit. Working with his brother Harrison, Query later expanded the story to novel length, and the novel was published with the title Old Country. Hancock’s adaptation will follow a husband and wife who buy their dream ranch only to discover the land is alive with ancient spirits, and survival means submitting to increasingly disturbing rituals with each turn of the season. James will play the wife.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines director Lindsey Anderson Beer has been said to be producing a film based on another Query book, Wilderness Reform, for Paramount. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the My Wife and I Bought a Ranch adaptation was once set up at the Netflix streaming service (they picked up the rights back in 2021), but it has since moved to Amazon MGM Studios.

Producers on this project include 21 Laps, which is run by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine, as well as Jason Blum and Michael Clear of Blumhouse Atomic Monster. 12:01 Films’ Scott Glassgold and Dan Cohen, formerly of 21 Laps, are also producing.
