Line-up for all-female Ghostbusters revealed; Plus, official release date!

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

UPDATE: Director Paul Feig has tweeted out the official release date for the film: July 22, 2016.

Sony is almost set with the line-up for Paul Feig's all-female GHOSTBUSTERS reboot. Rumors of Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig appear to have been true as both actresses look poised to lead the quarter of paranormal investigators in the film aiming to begin production this summer in New York City. Joining them will be SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE cast-members Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, both of whom have proven to be the funnier additions to the NBC series in several years.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that while no deals are finalized, this will more than likely be the cast when GHOSTBUSTERS gets underway. Whether the characters will mimic the original film's foursome is unknown. Whether Dan Aykroyd or Ernie Hudson will appear in the film is up in the air but I would expect that Feig's film will echo the original while also acting as a completely standalone reboot of the story.

Fans have been up in arms about the "all female" angle for the new GHOSTBUSTERS but as long as the movie is good, shouldn't that be all that matters? I mean, if we cannot get the original cast back for a third movie, why not try something different. At this point, if the movie sucks, we can honestly look at this as a separate series and not a part of the classic GHOSTBUSTERS franchise.

GHOSTBUSTERS will likely aim for a 2016 release.
