Louis C.K. will write, direct, and star in I’m a Cop

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

It's been many years since comedian Louis C.K. directed a feature film; his last effort was 2001's POOTIE TANG which, after a troubled production, saw the comedian being removed by Paramount during post-production. Despite that terrible experience he's ready for another crack at the big-screen as THR has announced that Louis C.K. will write, direct, and star in I'M A COP. Will he take on craft services as well?

THR rattles off a synopsis:

The script tells of a depressed middle-aged man who is a volunteer police officer living in the shadow of his mother, a highly decorated retired officer. When she dies, her continued influence forces him to become a real police officer, which is something he never wanted to be.

Louis C.K. also performs that same triple duty on his FX series Louie, of which I consider myself a big fan, so if he can bring that same magic to the big-screen we could be in for something very special indeed. Looking back on POOTIE TANG, Louis C.K. is the first to admit that his attitude played a big part in the failure of that film:

I was a brat back when I made Pootie Tang. I was dealing with people every day whose pressures I didn't understand, and I wasn't very nice about how I said no to them. I put myself in a position I didn't have to be in. A lot of what makes this kind of stuff work is empathy.

It seems as though Louie has learned quite a lot in the in the intervening years and is ready for the challenege that a feature will bring him. Louie, which airs on FX, is currently in the middle of its fifth season. Check it out.
