Luca: Disney & Pixar’s fish out of water tale gets a new trailer

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Those hoping to get another look at Disney and Pixar's upcoming original feature film Luca are in luck because we've got a brand-new trailer and poster to share. The film, which streams exclusively on Disney+ for all subscribers beginning June 18, 2021, showcases one incredible summer in the Italian seaside town of Portorosso—seen through the eyes of a sea monster named Luca.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa, Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface. The voice cast features Jacob Tremblay as Luca Paguro, Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto Scorfano, Emma Berman as Giulia Marcovaldo, Saverio Raimondo as town bully Ercole Visconti, Maya Rudolph as Luca’s mom Daniela, Marco Barricelli as Giulia’s dad Massimo, Jim Gaffigan as Luca’s dad Lorenzo,  Sandy Martin as Luca’s grandma, and Giacomo Gianniotti as a local fisherman.

Several Pixar staff members have been making waves over the release of Luca, saying they're disappointed by Disney's decision to skip theaters and head straight to Disney+, despite theaters re-opening and the exhibition market slowly coming back to life. Just like Pete Docter's Oscar-winning animated film SoulLuca will be available to Disney+ subscribers for free upon release.

“‘Luca’ doesn’t even have a premium price next to it,” one staffer told Insider. “Does it make it lesser? It’s hard to grasp.”

"We don’t want to be a title just on Disney Plus,” said another staffer, while voicing their frustration. “These movies are crafted for the big screen. We want you to watch these movies with no distractions, no looking at your phones.”

A major concern for Pixar staffers is that Disney+ streaming numbers are not the best metric for determining a film's success. Moreover, if the public remains unaware of the film's monetary achievements, what does that conversation look like?

If you subscribe to Disney+, be sure to watch Luca during its opening weekend to help send a clear signal to the House of Mouse that this film is just as important as any theatrical release.
