Mattel has been developing more than a handful of projects based on its iconic toy brands, whether they make sense or not, one of which is Matchbox The Movie. The upcoming action-adventure does have some big talent behind it, with Extraction‘s Sam Hargrave directing and John Cena starring as an undercover CIA agent. Apple TV has released a few first-look images for Matchbox The Movie and announced a global release date of October 9.

What We Know About Matchbox The Movie

As far as I know, there’s not really any lore behind the Matchbox toys. One might question why the hell they’re making a movie about them, but on the brighter side, the lack of story gives the filmmaker creative freedom to try just about anything, so long as vehicles are involved.

Matchbox The Movie is described as “a globetrotting adventure” which follows a group of friends who have been close since they were kids. Cena plays an undercover CIA agent who is also the group’s long-absent leader. When he returns to their small town, he unwittingly gets them mixed up in a frantic international pursuit to save the world.

In addition to Cena, the film also stars Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, and Arturo Castro, with Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani also appearing. Hargrave directs from a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan).

Next Up From Mattel

After the massive success of Barbie, Mattel got the ball rolling on projects based on more of its games and properties. We’ve got movies or TV shows based on Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Hot Wheels, and even Magic 8 Ball in our future, but the next project to hit our screens will be Masters of the Universe.

Starring Nicholas Galitzine (Mary & George), the film follows “ten-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe.” The first teaser trailer actually looked like a lot of fun, and fans are cautiously optimistic. The film is set to hit theaters on June 5.
