Chris Rock, Director
Chris Rock will always have a foot in comedy, but the iconic stand-up comedian has been expanding his palette for several years. Although they were still comedies, Rock’s directorial efforts with I Think I Love My Wife and Top Five have also started to lean into some dramatic beats. In 2021, the Saturday Night Live alum played against type as a cop in the horror film Spiral, which was a spin-off of the Saw movies. Now, Rock sits back in the director’s chair with a film he also wrote and downgraded his role to a supporting character in the new drama, Misty Green. A24 has just released the trailer for the film.
Misty Twisty
The official synopsis from A24 reads, “Years after her Hollywood breakthrough, a talented actress whose career has stalled fights for her second act.” But, a bit more detail comes courtesy of Deadline, as Rock’s film is about an actress named Misty Green, who is an “undeniably talented actress, but her vices have derailed every attempt to revitalize her career. Her best opportunity in ages arrives in the form of Jordan (Rock), a film director with the perfect role for her – were it not for their contentious past.”
Misty Green will be among the many films set to make their world premieres at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The movie stars Rosalind Eleazar, Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Anna Kendrick, Topher Grace and Rock. Peter Rice and Rock produce the drama alongside James Lopez for Macro Film Studios and Tommy Oliver for Confluential Films. The executive producers on board include Charles D. King for Macro Film Studios and Codie Elaine Oliver for Confluential Films.
Chris Rock made Christian Bale break
As Rock continues to embark in more dramatic fare, years ago, he had the opportunity to work with David O. Russell and Christian Bale on Amsterdam. It’s on this movie that Rock did something that few people got to do — break Christian Bale. Bale told the story of how he found Rock so funny that he couldn’t concentrate on his performance, so he had to keep his distance. According to Bale, “I remember his first day. I was excited to meet him. I’m a big fan of his standup. Then he arrives, and he’s doing some things. David [O. Russell] told him to tell me some stories that I didn’t know he was gonna tell me, which is the way David works often. And I was loving it. But Chris is so bloody funny, and I found that I couldn’t act because I was just becoming Christian laughing at Chris Rock. So I had to go to him. I went, ‘Mate, I love talking to you, and we have mutual friends, but I can’t do it anymore. Because David didn’t ask me to make this film so he could just watch me giggle. He wants me to be Burt, and I’m forgetting how to be Burt.’”
Meanwhile, Misty Green opens this October.
