Disney, Star Wars, Avatar

Gather round all you Mouseketeers, the time has come for Walt Disney Studios to unveil its upcoming slate following the recent acquisition of the Fox film studios! And while you might think that you've already flagged the most important dates in your Calendar app, I'll tell you right now that the House of Mouse has recently made some changes to the schedule as well as a series of major additions. Alright, let's break it down one time!

After arriving at Marvel's epic conclusion to their Infinity Saga with AVENGERS: ENDGAME continuing to break box office records, Disney's summer lineup includes Guy Ritchie's live-action version of ALADDIN starring Will Smith as the Genie. The aforementioned Arabian adventure will make wishes come true in theaters on May 24th, with Fox's DARK PHOENIX emerging on the big screen come June 7th. Meanwhile, Pixar's TOY STORY 4 is set to escape its toybox for a June 21 debut, with Fox's action comedy STUBER pulling into cinemas on July 12th. Next we find director Jon Favreau's THE LION KING proudly marching into theaters on July 19th, with Fox 2000's THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN skidding up to a August 9 release. There's also Fox Searchlight's READY OR NOT thriller starring Samara Weaving and Andie MacDowell that's set to hit theaters on August 23rd.

Finally, we find three of Disney's titles playing release date musical chairs as AD ASTRA has been moved to a September 20, 2019 release, Fox's long-gestating THE NEW MUTANTS arriving on April 3, 2020, and ARTEMIS FOWL now set to arrive on May 29, 2020.

Toward the latter end of this year, the studio that Walt Disney built will unleash THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW on October 4 and FORD V. FERRARI on November 15th. Next we find Disney's MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL starring Angelina Jolie being conjured for an October 18 bow, while Disney Animation's FROZEN 2 will let it go in cinemas on November 22. Of course, everyone knows that STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER will land on December 20th, but did you know that Blue Sky Studio's SPIES IN DISGUISE starring Will Smith, Karen Gillan and Tom Holland is moving from its original September date to a Christmas release? With regard to the studio's early 2020 titles, Fox's UNDERWATER will float into cinemas on January 10, with a new film in the KINGSMAN franchise scheduled for a Valentine's Day release. Meanwhile, CALL OF THE WILD will arrive on February 21st, followed by Pixar's ONWARD on March 6th and Disney's live-action version of MULAN on March 27th.

After applying some updates to their schedule, Disney has set release dates for major projects belonging to both the Star Wars and Avatar franchises. In addition to STAR WARS: THE RISE OF THE SKYWALKER’s December 20 release, Disney has marked three yet-to-be-titled Star Wars films to be unleashed during the pre-Christmas window every other year beginning in 2022. On the same "big picture" ticket we find four AVATAR films slated for release, which are set to invite moviegoers back to Pandora on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2021. For the holiday 2020 season, Fox's WEST SIDE STORY will dance its way toward a December 18 release, with Disney's live-action CRUELLA opening on Wednesday, December 23rd.

“We’re excited to put in place a robust and diverse slate that lays the foundation of our long-term strategy, bringing together a breadth of films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Fox, Fox Searchlight, and Blue Sky Studios to create an extraordinary collection of cinematic experiences for audiences around the world,” said Cathleen Taff, President, Theatrical Distribution, Franchise Management, and Business & Audience Insights, The Walt Disney Studios. “With a strong summer already in place, we are eager to carry that momentum forward over the coming years thanks to a creative wellspring of bold and imaginative stories coming from our world-class studios – including several new chapters of two revered franchises, Avatar and Star Wars.”
