Clark Gregg discusses his future as Marvel’s SHIELD Agent Coulson

One of the best things about Marvel’s movie universe isn’t just its self-contained nature or even one of its main characters. That honor goes to level-headed S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Phil Coulson, perfectly played by actor Clark Gregg.

There were some rumors that Coulson might not make it through THE AVENGERS intact, thanks to writer-director Joss Whedon’s penchant for snuffing beloved secondary characters. But in a conversation with Crave Online, Gregg addressed his fate directly: “I’m flattered that people care, but I wish they would stop saying this because they’re going to put it in somebody’s mind! I’m talking to them about doing IRON MAN 3 right now, and somebody’s going ‘Maybe Agent Coulson should die,’ and I’m like, ‘Hey, hey, hey! This is the best job I’ve ever had! Stop talking about killing Agent Coulson off.‘”

No, no, no. I talked to Joss Whedon early on. I said ‘Hey, why is everyone saying this?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, I’ve done that before. Don’t worry. You’re safe.'”

Nice to hear he’ll be back to give Tony Stark assistance (or grief). And Gregg’s composed character won’t be confined to flesh — he’ll also appear in cartoon form for Marvel’s upcoming ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN series: “It’s an animated show that they’re working on now that’s really going to be kind of groundbreaking. There’s some really cool scripts with Agent Coulson. It’s about some younger superheroes who are kind of undercover at a high school in New York City, and “Principal Coulson” is their minder. He’s undercover also as the principal, and it’s just funny.”

Additionally, Gregg makes a playful (?) comment that the heroes are facing the Kree instead of the oft-rumored Skrulls as the alien menace in THE AVENGERS, but that couldn’t be true… could it?
