Guardians 3 could start filming as soon as next year

For the most part, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 lived up to expectations, as the movie earned great reviews and has made $860 million globally. The Guardians will soon be kicking ass alongside the Avengers in INFINITY WAR, all before heading out on what will probably be their final adventure, of which James Gunn is currently knee-deep in creating.

While speaking with Collider to mark the film’s Blu-ray release this month (on digital this Tuesday), Gunn mentioned how GUARDIANS 3 will indeed mark the third act for this iteration of the Guardians team:

It’s been pretty easy. The truth is, the first movie is the first act, the second movie is the second act, and the third movie is the third act so I’m tying a lot of stuff together in the third film. We get a lot of answers on a lot of different things, so doing that in an elegant way takes a little bit of grace and elegance. It’s more challenging in that respect writing the third movie than the second movie.

For what he can allude to, Gunn said filming should begin “in a little over a year," and that he knows the precise date but isn't ready to announce. As well, the film will most likely be called GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3. As for the team we saw assembled at the end of VOL. 2 (including Sylvester Stallone), Gunn said there’s always a possibility of seeing them in action:

There’s always discussion with Ravagers — it would be THE RAVAGERS. It’s always a possibility. I would be excited.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say VOL. 2 is a better film overall than the first, but as far as visuals and humor I’d say it has moments where it tops the first. The sequel met my expectations, is what I can say, which is praise I don’t grant on to many sequels. Gunn has a firm grasp on the style and substance of the movies and the characters’ lore, so I have full faith he can conclude his trilogy with grace and splendor.

Own GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 on digital this Tuesday and on Blu-ray August 22.
