New Captain Marvel featurette explores the villainous Skrulls

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

We have learned much about the title hero in CAPTAIN MARVEL and where her journey may take her, but fans unfamiliar with the further reaches of the Marvel universe may not be as keen to her adversaries, the Skrulls. A legendary alien race in the comics who have caused many, many problems for our heroes over the years, a new featurette for the upcoming movie digs into their role in the movie as the cast and crew break down just who these shape-shifting baddies are, and how they can give you just one more reason not to trust “sweet” old ladies.

The video starts with a familiar line of dialogue from Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who tries to understand just who the Skrulls and the Kree (the alien race Carol Danvers becomes part of after leaving earth) are. “So, Skrulls are the bad guys,” he asks Danvers. “And you’re a Kree, a race of noble warriors.”

That may be an overs-simplification, but for the most part, he’s on target. The reality is the Skrull and the Kree got mad issues between each other, and now their conflict will spill over onto earth, where Danvers must suit up and save the planet she left behind years ago. The leader of the Skrulls and the main baddie here is the vicious Talos (played by Ben Mendelsohn), who at the end of the video says, “This war is only beginning.” Earlier, co-director Anna Boden says the Skrulls are after something on earth, and that the mystery of the movie is learning what that is.

Along with the Skrull lesson we see some new footage from the movie, mostly simple images of other characters – like Jude Law’s character and Gemma Chan’s Minn-Erva – standing there looking cool. The movie arrives next week, and the early reactions have been very positive, with the first round of critics praising the movie’s surprisingly weird tone and performances from Larson and Mendelsohn.

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

CAPTAIN MARVEL hits theaters March 8.
