Rumor: Han Solo movie being pushed back to December 2018

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

When all is said and done, ROGUE ONE will be the highest-grossing movie released in 2016 (domestically at least), as it nears the current title holder, FINDING DORY. This should come as no shock to STAR WARS die-hards, but the first spinoff had some in the industry curious about its potential success, which seems silly now. The WARS brand has won out, and clearly the December release schedule is working wonders for it, so much so we could see a shift in a future film's release.

According to a source at Making Star Wars, the release date for the upcoming HAN SOLO movie will shift from its current May 25, 2018 release slot and move to December 13 (a Thursday, meaning officially on December 14) later that year.  The film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be moving into less crowded territory, with the only movie slated for then being the Peter Jackson-produced MORTAL ENGINES, and would solidify Disney’s dominance of the month.

Granted, as the headline implies, this is just a rumor at this point, but a shift like this would make more sense than releasing the movie in May like it’s currently slated to. Summer 2018, like every summer, will be jammed-packed with potential hits, including the new AVENGERS movie earlier in May, so Disney encroaching on the success of its own movie seems counter-intuitive. In addition, FORCE AWAKENS and ROGUE have dominated the box office thanks to lesser competition going into January and the holiday season meaning kids and families can go again and again, along with the fanboys.

To reiterate, this is merely a rumor at this point, but it's something that can be easily confirmed or denied quite soon, and is worth keeping an eye out for. Frankly I think it would be a smart move, given the aforementioned reasons. EPISODE VIII comes out this December, and it seems like too soon to release another WARS movie only five months later. This gives the release more room to breathe and the movie more time to be worked on. Plus it will mean December is officially STAR WARS month, meaning you can plan your lies to your family about why you can’t come home for Christmas accordingly.

The HAN SOLO movie is currently slated for May 25, 2018 with Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke.
