Star Trek 2 a go

As J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK reboot approaches its May 8th release date, the folks over at Paramount are readying by…prepping the sequel? Word is that STAR TREK writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman will be joined by “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof to pen the film’s sequel. Some may view this as a case of counting one’s eggs before they hatch, but apparently Paramount is so pleased with Abrams’ film that a sequel is inevitable. Here’s what Lindelof has to say about this veritable jumping of the gun.

There’s obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn’t even come out yet, but we’re so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed.

No word yet on whether or not Abrams will direct the sequel although he is confirmed as a producer. Because STAR TREK will get the necessary origin story out of the way, the sequel can spread its wings and explore uncharted territories as far as story is concerned. Lindelof stresses that they will wait for audience reaction to the upcoming film before they make any definitive plot decisions for the sequel. And what if the film only grosses $20 million opening weekend; will they replace the current cast with the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL kids? I hope so.
