The Punisher season two locked & loaded for January 18 release on Netflix

Earlier this week we got the first teaser for the new season of THE PUNISHER, and now after a short wait, Netflix has graced us with the announcement of an official release date of January 18. The new season will see the return of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, and with the date announcement comes a new teaser for the show as well as a few new stills from season two.

Along with the promotional goodies, Netflix put out the official plot synopsis, teasing a new adventure that will force him to embrace the role of The Punisher:

Former marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham). As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace a life as The Punisher

Next is the video, which teases the continuing battle between Castle and his former pal, Billy Russo (Ben Barnes), who is "slowly beginning to heal from the traumatic brain injury Frank inflicted on him, it’s only a matter of time before Billy starts to put the pieces of the puzzle back together."

While it’s very easy to get excited about the second season, we also have to brace ourselves for that inevitable cancellation. Netflix is moving away from the Marvel game and has since canceled IRON FIST, LUKE CAGE and DAREDEVIL after their most recent seasons, with PUNISHER and JESSICA JONES left on the chopping block. Still, that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy this new season of PUNISHER, which hopefully is solid enough to hold on its own while we wait and see what happens with the character in the future.

THE PUNISHER season two hits Netflix January 18.
