Update: New pics, plot details & poster for Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Who you gonna call to perk up your Friday afternoon? If you said the Ghostbusters, well then, give yourself a gold star! While we're all impatiently waiting for a trailer related to Jason Reitman's GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE to reveal itself, Vanity Fair has recently arrived on the ghost-busting scene to share new images and plot details about the upcoming film.

According to VF's exclusive report, the new story will follow THE LEFTOVER's Carrie Coon as mom Callie, CAPTAIN MARVEL's McKenna Grace as her science-obsessed daughter Phoebe, and STRANGER THINGS' Wolf Finhard as gearhead son Trevor. They have left everything they know and moved to a small town in Oklahoma after inheriting property from the father she didn’t know.

After choosing to banish the cast, characters, and plot elements of Sony's 2016 GHOSBUSTERS movie to the far-reaches of a dormant Containment Unit, the studio and Reitman have created a new chapter of the franchise that connects directly with the original. It's all happening due to the “Manhattan Crossrip”, a “technical term for that long-ago bizarre incident in New York involving an apocalypse-summoning skyscraper, a gargantuan killer marshmallow man, and four working stiffs who managed to fight back against an ancient Sumerian God named Gozer.” While many members of the original GHOSTBUSTERS cast are expected to return, we've yet to learn how they will fit into the new film.

Additionally, Paul Rudd is also set to star as a summer school teacher named Mr. Grooberson, who was a kid when the Manhattan Crossrip occurred. While later generations may think of it as a myth, or have dismissed the memory entirely, he remembers it total clarity and is excited to pass on that knowledge to another generation, just in case it happens again.

“As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters,” Reitman revealed Vanity Fair. “Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”

While GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE stands to introduce plenty of new elements to the franchise, I can't help but wonder how the original will factor into the upcoming film's foundation. It's to be understood that there's a lot riding on this project, especially when you consider how fans reacted to Paul Feig's's 2016 reboot starring an all-female cast of paranormal investigators. Personally, I never had much confidence in Feig's version setting the world on fire, but I didn't hate it as much as some Ghostbuster die-hards either. To each their own I suppose, and I hope like hell that Reitman's Afterlife gives fans what they want, otherwise we're going to be stuck writing about all the tiresome backlash.

GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE will begin haunting theaters on July 10, 2020.
