Zack Snyder on how Justice League fits into the DCEU continuity

Zack Snyder, Justice League, HBO Max

I was never one of those people who thought it would ever happen, but it was announced earlier this year that Zack Snyder would be bringing his vision of JUSTICE LEAGUE to WarnerMedia's HBO Max streaming service next year. "I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality," said Snyder in WarnerMedia's press-release. It's a day that many fans will undoubtedly be counting down to, especially considering how long they campaigned to make the SnyderCut a reality.

However, it's been a number of years since Zack Snyder was in control of JUSTICE LEAGUE, and in that time, Warner Bros. has shifted their roadmap for the DCEU rather significantly, which begs the question, just how will Snyder's JUSTICE LEAGUE fit in? Short answer, it won't. While speaking on Beyond the Trailer, Snyder elaborated on that very question

It'll be five years old when it comes out, for me, I've been living with it for that long. Frankly, the DC cinematic universe has branched like a tree and blossomed and grown in amazing and great ways… But for me, where [JUSTICE LEAGUE] falls, I believe that it really starts to represent its own path. It’s kind of separate now from the DC cinematic universe continuity, it's divergent in that way, and I think that’s a good thing.

After joking that the film takes place in the "Snyder-verse," the director added said that his "main focus" for his version of JUSTICE LEAGUE is to "satisfy" the story which began in MAN OF STEEL and continued through BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. Snyder admits that the theatrical version of JUSTICE LEAGUE probably fits "tighter in continuity" in terms of the DCEU films which followed, such as AQUAMAN and the upcoming WONDER WOMAN 1984, so it sounds like it's best to consider the SnyderCut as its own thing rather than try to shoe-horn it into the current DCEU continuity.

As far as when we might see more of the SnyderCut of JUSTICE LEAGUE, Snyder teased that he "may show a clip" during Justice-Con this Saturday (July 25th), but seemingly ruined the surprise by adding, "It is a small clip – oh, I mean, I may." The director also teased that another small announcement will be made during Justice Con as a "little side thing just for the fans." Looking forward to it!
