Earlier this week, FIFA said that several celebrities are heading to this year’s World Cup closing ceremony, including Tom Cruise, whose eccentric new comedy, Digger, is currently the talk of Tinseltown. How Cruise will participate in this year’s event is unknown, but at least his new character, Digger Rockwell, is feeling frisky about the big game. In a new promo for the anticipated sporting event, Cruise, as Digger, is lounging in a cushy chair, lazily performing tricks with a soccer ball. As the camera zooms in, Digger executes fancy footwork while trying to impress his ailing cat. After kicking the ball away, Digger looks raring and ready to stand on the sidelines of the pitch, shouting his enthusiasm until his lungs burst and his voice fades to a whisper.
Who else will be performing at the World Cup final?
In addition to Tom Cruise, Laura Pausini, Nicole Scherzinger, Robbie Williams, and the internet sensation IShowSpeed will perform at this year’s World Cup closing ceremony. The finale of this year’s World Cup race takes place on Sunday, July 19, at the New York-New Jersey Stadium (commonly known as MetLife Stadium). While FIFA did not offer any details about the upcoming performances, word has it that Cruise will make a “special appearance” at the event. Additionally, Jennifer Hudson will perform the National Anthem at the event.
When he’s not making plans for his mysterious FIFA World Cup appearance, Tom Cruise is promoting the release of his upcoming comedy Digger. In the film by Alejandro Iñárritu, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a balding, overweight oil tycoon with a thick Southern drawl. As the new Digger trailer shows, Cruise’s unconventional character is responsible for an ecological catastrophe that pushes the world to the brink of environmental collapse and nuclear war. With time running out, Digger embarks on a globe-spanning mission to try and undo the damage he’s caused.
Will the World Cup final host Tom Cruise or Digger Rockwell?
The question I have now is, will Cruise perform at the World Cup closing ceremony as himself or as Digger Rockwell? Initially, I thought Cruise would perform a death-defying stunt as a part of the celebration, but now I have my doubts. Is FIFA teaming with Cruise for a larger-than-life film promo? Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to find out, as the 19th is only two days away.
Will we get the classic, death-defying Tom Cruise jumping out of the MetLife stadium rafters, or are we getting a full-blown, prosthetic-heavy sketch from Digger Rockwell? Place your bets in the comments below, and let us know if you’re ready for Iñárritu’s wildest movie yet. Let us know in the comments section below.
