I've actually been really curious about Taran Killam's feature debut KILLING GUNTHER starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It has a pretty outlandish plot – "a group of eccentric assassins are fed up with Gunther (Scwarzenegger), the world's greatest hitman, and decide to kill him, but their plan turns into a series of bungled encounters as Gunther seems to always be one step ahead" – that it can't help but be at least a little fun. It's like a kind of goofy (or goofier) take on SMOKIN' ACES or something.
And as the clip above shows, it is extremely goofy (i.e. the dated "duck face" tag at the end). However, there are still things to like. The actor's seem on point, and there were some really funny sight gags throughout (I loved the bionic-arm guy laughing at a silly hologram in the background). And I don't hate the mockumentary conceit, even if I know it's a bit played out – especially the pretty impressive one-take shot that happened once they thought they found the titular Gunther. I'm still on the fence about the whole thing (can this premise last a whole movie and keep momentum?), but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot.
Meanwhile, KILLING GUNTHER will blast into theaters September 15th.
