Patty Jenkins wanted to bring a little Romeo & Juliet to Thor 2

Patty Jenkins Thor The Dark World

Back before Patty Jenkins was tasked with bringing WONDER WOMAN to the big-screen, she had signed with Marvel to take the reins of THOR: THE DARK WORLD. However, just a few short months later, Jenkins had exited the project due to those pesky creative differences. Patty Jenkins told Uproxx that although she "heartbroken" at the time, she realized that she wasn't the right director for the project and had she stuck around, she likely wouldn't have been in the running to direct WONDER WOMAN. If she been able to do the story which she wanted to do for the THOR sequel, it might have been a different story.

While speaking with Buzzfeed, Jenkins spilled a few details about her version of THOR: THE DARK WORLD which would have tossed a little William Shakespeare into the world of Asgard.

I pitched them that I wanted to do Romeo and Juliet. I wanted Jane to be stuck on Earth and Thor to be stuck where he is. And Thor to be forbidden to come and save Jane because Earth doesn't matter. And then by coming to save her … they end up discovering that Malekith is hiding the dark energy inside of Earth because he knows that Odin doesn't care about Earth, and so he's using Odin's disinterest in Earth to trick him. And so it was like, I wanted it to be a grand [movie] based on Romeo and Juliet … a war between the gods and the earthlings, and Thor saves the day and ends up saving Earth.

Would THOR: THE DARK WORLD have benefited from Patty Jenkins' infusion of Romeo and Juliet? It's hard to say, the final film wasn't without its moments, but speaking for myself, THOR: THE DARK WORLD wound up being a largely forgettable affair as well as one of the weaker installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I've got my fingers crossed that THOR: RAGNAROK will win me back.

Patty Jenkins seems to have had much better luck with WONDER WOMAN as the film looks extremely promising and the early reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with our own JimmyO calling the film "fantastic" and "as touching as it is thrilling!" We'll be able to make up our own minds before too long as WONDER WOMAN is set to hit theaters on June 2nd.
