Paul Rudd & Will Ferrell team for true crime series The Shrink Next Door

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Do you enjoy drinking Scotch? Do you love lamp? Well then, it's possible that you're a fan of the Anchorman films, starring Will Ferrell as the egotistical Ron Burgundy, and Paul Rudd as the wannabe ladies' man Brian Fantana, among several others. If I'm correct in my assumption of your penchant for tomfoolery and plenty of pornstache, then you might be interested to know that Ferrell and Rudd are re-teaming for the MRC Television limited series THE SHRINK NEXT DOOR. The newly-announced project is based on the 2019 No. 1 Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast of the same name.

Here's the podcast's official description courtesy of Wondery.com:

Veteran journalist Joe Nocera had a Hamptons neighbor: Ike, therapist to celebrities and Manhattan’s elite. He had star-studded parties at the vacation house. But one summer, Joe came back to discover that Ike was gone, and the summer house next door had never belonged to Ike in the first place. It was Marty’s, a therapy patient of Ike’s who had finally broken free from Ike’s psychological domination. THE SHRINK NEXT DOOR is the story of one therapist’s psychological manipulation as he crossed lines and defrauded his patients — and he’s still out there. The Shrink Next Door is based off true events.

For the MRC adaptation, Rudd will star as psychiatrist Dr. Isaac "Ike" Herschkopf, while Ferrell will step into the role of Martin "Marty" Markowitz, Herschkopf's longtime patient. As the story progresses, THE SHRINK NEXT DOOR will explore what happens when a trusted medical professional becomes too involved in the life of their patient. In time, the tale is filled with exploitative and manipulative maneuvers that will place viewers at the epicenter of a dysfunctional power struggle between two people in desperate need of guidance.

Directing THE SHRINK NEXT DOOR will be THE BIG SICK helmer Michael Showalter with Georgia Pritchett writing the script. In terms of production, Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Brittney Segal will executive produce for Gloria Sanchez Productions. Meanwhile, Rudd and Pritchett will also serve as executive producers, with Showalter and Jordana Mollick also set to executive produce via Semi-Formal Productions. Finally, Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy for Wondery and Jared Sandberg, Katie Boyce, and Francesca Levy for Bloomberg Media will act as EPs, with Joe Nocera as co-executive producer.
