When I found out that Cameron Crowe was making a documentary for Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary, I was elated. The person who makes movies that really speak to me is doing a film on a band that also really speaks to me. Two of my favorites. It’s like a dream.
Crowe has a long history with the band, spanning back from their cameos in 1992’s SINGLES. This was when they were called Mookie Blaylock, after the former basketball player. Due to trademark issues, the band was forced to change their name to Pearl Jam, a mash-up between the name of Eddie Vedder’s great-grandma and some peyote jam her Native American husband used to make. Okay, so the last half was a fib on their part, but it stuck and they have been Pearl Jam ever since.
The band released a small clip from Crowe’s documentary. They briefly mention the name change and overload us with nostalgia. Check out the awesome clip below. I also love me some Alice in Chains.
