Zack Snyder is building a new cinematic universe with his two-film sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, the first installment of which is scheduled to be released through the Netflix streaming service on December 22nd. With that date still five months away, Netflix is looking to build the hype by revealing information on the characters that populate Rebel Moon. Images of several of the characters can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Snyder has always been open about the fact that he’s hoping “a massive IP and a universe that can be built out” from the foundation of Rebel Moon. He crafted the story for Rebel Moon with 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad, and the pair wrote the screenplay with Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten. The events of the film, which draws inspiration from Seven Samurai, are set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.

The film stars Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place Part II), Ray Fisher (Justice League), Doona Bae (The Host), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Staz Nair (Supergirl), E. Duffy (whose previous credits are all short films), Charlotte Maggi (MaveriX), Sky Yang (Tomb Raider), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Alfonso Herrera (Ozark), Cary Elwes (Saw), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal), and Stuart Martin (Army of Thieves).

Now here’s the new information from Netflix: Ed Skrein plays Admiral Atticus Noble, a nefarious Imperium enforcer. Sofia Boutella plays Kora, an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back. Charlie Hunnam plays Kai, a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest. Michiel Huisman plays Gunnar, a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy. Djimon Hounsou plays General Titus, a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium. Staz Nair plays Tarak, a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu. Doona Bae plays Nemesis, a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons. Ray Fisher plays Darrian Bloodaxe, an insurgent who has been harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks. E. Duffy plays Milius, a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World. Anthony Hopkins plays “Jimmy,” an ancient robot knight that once defended a slain king but has now faded into a more peaceful existence.

Snyder, his wife Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller are producing Rebel Moon through their company Stone Quarry. Eric Newman is producing via his banner, Grand Electric, while Grand Electric’s Sarah Bowen executive produces.
