R.L. Stine wants Goosebumps 3 to be scarier & less funny

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Yesterday we passed along word that HBO Max is developing a series called POINT HORROR which will be based on the Point Horror books written by GOOSEBUMPS and FEAR STREET author R.L Stine. And today I found a bit of news that seemed to get passed by earlier this year.

Turns out, earlier this year, Stine said that if there was a GOOSEBUMPS 3 he would want it to be a little scarier, and less funny than Rob Letterman's GOOSEBUMPS starring Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, and Odeya Rush or its sequel, GOOSEBUMPS 2: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN.

Stine says:

I haven't heard anything about a third film. [But] If they did a third [movie], I would want them to make it a little scarier, and less funny. They go for laughs, which is wonderful, and they have scary scenes, but […] I'd like to see the movies just heighten the scares a little bit.

I don't know about you but I'd still totally be up for GOOSEBUMPS 3. Especially if they brought back the original cast and followed Stine's hopes to make the whole affair scarier rather than funnier than the previous flicks. Let's hope it happens!

GOOSEBUMPS 2: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN centered on:

Best friends Sonny and Sam who while collecting junk one day, meet Slappy, a mischievous talking dummy from an unpublished "Goosebumps" book by R.L. Stine. Hoping to start his own family, Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life — just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save Sonny's mom and foil Slappy's plan.

Ari Sandel directed GOOSEBUMPS 2: HAUNTED HALLOWEEN from a screenplay written by Rob Lieber from a story by Darren Lemke based on the books by R. L. Stine. Neal H. Moritz and Deborah Forte produced. It starred Wendi McLendon-Covey, Madison Iseman, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Caleel Harris, Chris Parnell, and Ken Jeong. Sony Pictures released the fun flick back on October 12, 2018.
