Connie Nielsen, who may be best known for playing Lucilla in Gladiator and Hippolyta in the DC Extended Universe films Wonder Woman, Justice League, Wonder Woman 1984, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, has signed on to join Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), David Oyelowo (The Girl Before), and Bill Nighy (Shaun of the Dead) in the high concept thriller Role Play. Deadline hears that Role Play has a “franchise-able hook”. This potential gateway to a franchise centers on

a married couple (Cuoco and Oyelowo) whose lives turn upside down when secrets come out about each other’s pasts.

Nighy will be playing a mysterious stranger who comes into their lives, a character that Billy Bob Thornton had been in talks to play before running into a scheduling conflict. Details on Nielsen’s character have not been revealed.

Role Play is being directed by Thomas Vincent, who was previously the lead director on the Bodyguard television series and directed the pilot episode of the Reacher series. Here Vincent is working from a screenplay by Seth Owen, based on an original idea from executive producer George Heller of Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Owen previously wrote the sci-fi thriller Morgan.

Coming to us from Studiocanal, Picture Company, and Amazon Prime Video, Role Play has been fully financed by Studiocanal. Amazon Prime Video has the distribution rights in the U.S. and many other territories. The Picture Company partners Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona are producing the film as part of their long-term deal at Studiocanal. Cuoco is producing it through her company Yes Norman Productions.

There’s not much information available on Role Play at this time, but it sounds like an interesting project and Vincent is assembling a solid cast. I look forward to seeing how this one is going to turn out.
