Sadly, Netflix has canceled Sense8 after Season 2

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

Unfortunately, Netflix has decided to cancel its all-inclusive sci-fi drama series SENSE8, from Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski, after just two incredible seasons. The decision to discontinue the show comes less than a month after the May 5th release of Season 2.

In commenting on the cancellation, Netflix VP of original content Cindy Holland stated, "After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end. It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world.  We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.”

Sadly, due to the program's lengthy pre-production, production and post-production, it took the team nearly two years to ready SENSE8's Season 2 return to the premiere streaming service. Add to this the fact that the options on the cast had expired and Netflix was responsible for letting them fall by the wayside. As an aside, Netflix has followed up on their contractual neglect by reaching out to the core cast in the effort of negotiating new contracts. Alas, select cast members had moved on to other projects, their schedules no long permitting them to participate in a third season.

Well, shit!  Smooth move, Netflix. There goes the prospect of one of my favorite shows of all-time being concluded in a proper manner. It's a funny thing really, my wife and I were just last night discussing the show's possible cancellation, on the way home from a Tool concert. We both agreed that the chances of the show continuing on were unlikely, but we're still hoping for the best. My wish, now, is that the Wachowski's somehow find way to privately arrange contracts with the cast, and explore the idea of scheduling out time that would allow for them all to shoot a two hour finale-like film. While I'm not entirely sure how the process works, I refuse to extinguish my belief that, one day, the tangled tale of my favorite Sensates will conclude the way it was originally intended.

Seasons one and two of SENSE8 are available to stream on Netflix right now.
