In an interview with Total Film, Sam Worthington revealed some tidbits about where his character of Perseus is at in his life and the struggles he’ll endure in the sequel.
“It’s about a dysfunctional family,” says Worthington. “You’ve got a guy – a son – that doesn’t like his Dad. His real Dad. And his real Dad is having problems with his brothers. The son has his own son now, his own family and his own responsibility, and it’s about keeping the family together. That’s basically how we looked at it. Then you thrown in a shit-load of monsters and special effects and you should have a good movie.”
Set 10 years after CLASH OF THE TITANS ,the sequel finds Perseus embarking on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus (Liam Neeson), who has been targeted for capture by his traitorous son, Ares (Edgar Ramirez), and his brother, Hades (Ralph Fiennes). Perseus enlists the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon’s demigod son, Argenor (Toby Kebbell), and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy) to overthrow the Titans and save both Zeus and all of mankind from Hell on Earth.
Worthington talked about the physical struggles of his character as well, noting that he and director Jonathan Liebesman (BATTLE: LOS ANGELES ) wanted to see Perseus get “beat up a lot more.”
“If you look at things like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, the main hero got his arse handed to him. And we went, ‘Even though Perseus is half-god, he’s also half-human, and if you keep knocking the hero down he struggles a lot more’. In the first one Perseus is a bit of a superhuman and he doesn’t seem to get hurt. In this one, he gets hurt all the time. That was something we strove for,” said Worthington.
Sounds like they have a decent start to what is really a ho-hum series. The remake was fairly lackluster, but the one strength I think WRATH has is that it doesn’t have to measure up to another film. Will standing on its own two legs be enough to rise about mediocrity?
