Shawn Levy is a name you might not know off the top of your head, but you’ve definitely seen his movies. He’s behind kids fare like CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and THE PINK PANTHER remake, he’s ventured into PG-13 shenanigans with JUST MARRIED and DATE NIGHT, but he’s probably most known for his NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM series which have made pretty massive amounts of cash.
His new project, Variety reports, is an adaptation of the kids book ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY as a “high concept” family comedy. What’s “high” about the concept is unclear, as the book featured a bunch of terrible shit happening to one kid all day, and the movie pitch says that this terrible shit will extend to his entire family as well. I’m sure it’ll make for some zany scenarios, as surely the lima bean dinner, tooth cavity and lack of cereal prize aren’t exactly going to be riveting enough for the big screen. I’m already picturing Jim Carrey as the father, slipping on things.
Kids book adaptations have been hit more miss for the most part, and I’m not sure where exactly an iteration of BAD DAY would fall. It wouldn’t seem very adaptable into a film, but f*cking Spike Jonze turned WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE’s few pages into a movie that’s probably going to be shown in quite a few psych classes.
