Director Guy Ritchie’s “action adventure mystery” SHERLOCK HOLMES was initially going to be doing its detecting on November 13th of this year, but now the celebrated sleuth will be gift-wrapped and placed under the tree to be opened Christmas Day.

Warner Bros. has shifted the release to December 25th in response to the Roland Emmerich disaster/movie 2012 bouncing into the November weekend from its previous July 10th slot. SHERLOCK had already moved once to avoid the TWILIGHT sequel NEW MOON (coming November 20th).

Christmas is already bulking up, with Disney’s PRINCESS AND THE FROG, the ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS sequel, and an untitled Nancy Meyers comedy already scheduled. James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi epic AVATAR opens the week before. Last Christmas Day was also a big opening day for major new releases, with VALKYRIE, MARLEY & ME, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, BEDTIME STORIES and THE SPIRIT all getting dropped off by Santa.

SHERLOCK HOLMES features Robert Downey Jr. as the two-fisted investigator, Rachel McAdams as his squeeze, Jude Law as Watson, Kelly Reilly (PRIDE & PREJUDICE) as Watson’s gal, and Mark Strong as the villain Blackwood.
