The past couple Spider-Man films not only explored the multiverse but were hits with critics and fans alike. Spider-Man: No Way Home may have dominated the box office with the return of past villains and both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse also impressed with a 97% tomatometer and 93% audience score. The film debut of Miles Morales was a smash hit and when the sequel was announced, it was met with great anticipation.

Wait no more! The trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse has webbed its way online! Sony drops the new trailer and sees the return of Morales, played by Shameik Moore, and Gwen Stacy, played by the delectable Hailee Steinfeld, in another adventure spanning parallel universes. Peter Parker also makes his return, and this entry will feature new characters like Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, played by Oscar Issac, Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk, played by Daniel Kaluuya,  and Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, played by Issa Rae.

The plot involves Miles reuniting with Gwen as they embark on an adventure meeting new multiverse Spider-people who are charged with guarding the different universes. When The Spot becomes a major threat, all the Spider-variants clash with their solutions to handle him. Through all this, Miles explores what it truly means to be a hero.

It was also recently announced that the film’s baddie this time around comes in the form of the classic Spider-man character, The Spot, which is to be voiced by Jason Schwartzman. Per Collider, “In the comic books, The Spot is a joke-villain, one that is not taken as seriously as the Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus.” One of the film’s directors, Kemp Powers, discusses their decision to adapt the unlikely villain, “But when you really look at his powers, there’s incredible potential. His ability to open portals across dimensions sets him up perfectly for the Spider-Verse. He’s the villain of the next two films… and let’s just say that The Spot and Miles are connected in surprising ways.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is slated to hit screens in June 2023.
