The Batman, Many Saints of Newark reactions from CinemaCon

While everyone is coming out of the Warner Bros CinemaCon presentation raving about the new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections, there were loads of other cool reveals at the panel, including a tiny taste of new footage from The Batman. While a full trailer will likely have to wait until DC Fandome on October 16th, we saw some behind-the-scenes footage that described director Matt Reeves’ grounded and gritty take on the character, who’s in his second year of being The Caped Crusader. Suffice to say, this will be the most realistic Batman movie ever, with some incredible fight choreography. Robert Pattinson may well end up being many people’s favourite Batman by the time this hits theatres.

We also got a few looks as Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in grounded, cat-burglar mode, plus a look at Andy Serkis’ Alfred, who’s significantly younger than any other version of the character we’ve seen on the big screen and looks badass. We then saw the same trailer that dropped at DC FanDome last year – so we’ll have to wait another six weeks or so for the new one.

The other big reveal was for The Many Saints of Newark: The Sopranos prequel. We saw the first few minutes of the movie, which introduced an unknown bit of info:

Michael Imperioli narrates the movie as Christopher Moltisanti from beyond the grave. This is appropriate as the main character in the film is his murdered father, Dickie, played here by Alessandro Nivola. When we first see the young Tony Soprano, Christopher introduces him by saying, “he strangled me.” As a Sopranos fan, I didn’t want this footage to end, and October 1st can’t come fast enough.

We then saw a bit of footage from Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho. Again, not much was revealed, but here’s something cool. In the little Clint Eastwood appreciation video the came before the new footage, Gene Hackman showed up as one of the talking heads interviewed after being M.I.A for years. I’m not sure this is new footage of him, but he looked older than we last saw him. One thing they were celebrating is that this is Eastwood’s first western since Unforgiven, although it’s a kinder, gentler and contemporary western.

There was also a tiny bit of footage for James Wan’s awesome looking horror flick Malignant, which comes out on September 10th. In the little behind the scenes featurette, Wan talked about wanting to move on from doing sequels to make something original, and his ode to Dario Argento giallo movies looks just that – BOLD. We also saw the trailer for King Richard, the Will Smith biopic of Venus and Serena Williams’ dad, Richard, who trained them to be champs. This looks like an Oscar play from Smith, and indeed, this seems like an excellent movie.

But what about Dune, you may be asking? In perhaps the only disappointment of the panel, they showed footage I already reported on a few weeks ago– the IMAX shot “spice miners rescue”. We then were introduced to a “new” trailer, just the second trailer that came out a few weeks ago. It still looks incredible.
