The Box: Anna Friel to star in supernatural horror anthology series

Fresh off of appearing in the Clive Barker film BOOKS OF BLOOD, which is available to watch on the Hulu streaming service, Anna Friel has signed on to star in the supernatural anthology series The Box. Friel is taking on the lead role of

Sharon Pici, a Kansas City Police Detective who is locked in a room that she cannot escape.

It's said that The Box will "begin as a character-driven psychological thriller but evolve into a supernatural horror".

The show was created by Adi Hasak, who serves as showrunner and has written or co-written all eight of the 30 minute episodes. Hasak's co-writers include Paula Killen, Josh Azouz, and Clare Siobhan Byrne.

Produced by Nordic Entertainment Group subsidiary Nice Drama, The Box will premiere on the NENT streaming service Viaplay in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Other distribution deals don't appear to have been secured, but the producers said there are distribution partners and broadcasters "circling" the project.

Hasak had this to say about The Box:

I’m simply thrilled at how our show came together. An American show, a top notch and dynamic Nordic streamer and studio in NENT, and a remarkably talented British actress in Anna Friel. This is truly the future of global TV."

Friel added:

I am excited to be working with NENT Group on such a fascinating project. Looking forward to the cameras rolling and going on this journey with Adi."

The plan is for The Box to begin filming in Stockholm, Sweden in February of next year.

While Friel has nearly thirty years of screen credits, I just recently became a fan of the actress through her work on the television series Marcella. I'm glad to see her taking on genre projects, and look forward to watching The Box.
