Acting in the theater

It can be a grueling thing to be an actor in the theater circuit. There’s a lot of time commitment and a lot of emotional commitment. But if you’re making your very first venture into this world, it can be pretty intimidating. Even more if you have a crazy director. That’s what Julianne Moore is finding out firsthand in the new Jesse Eisenberg-written-and-directed film The Debut. A24 has released the trailer for the upcoming film, which you can check out in the embed above. Additionally, A24 has also released two character posters. One features Moore as she auditions up on stage from the point of view of her co-star, Paul Giamatti, and one from her point of view, looking out into the auditorium with Giamatti watching her audition.

Details of The Debut

Jesse Eisenberg not only writes and directs the film, but he also wrote the music and lyrics featured in the film. The cast includes Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey, Jesse Eisenberg, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, Eldar Isgandarov and Bernadette Peters.

The official synopsis reads,
“When Mona Friedman is cast in a bit part at a small community theater, she transforms from a shy, unassuming housewife into a zealous method actor willing to do anything to protect the artistic integrity of her marginal role—even if it means waging war against the show’s domineering director.”

A release date for the film hasn’t been officially revealed as all the materials released simply say, “Coming Soon.”

The Social Reckoning

Eisenberg opted to pursue The Debut instead of returning to the role of Mark Zuckerberg in Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, which is a sequel to the 2010 film The Social Network, which Sorkin wrote. According to Aaron Sorkin, who took over directing duties from David Fincher, he made a determined effort to bring Eisenberg back. Sorkin revealed that he spent three days trying to convince the actor to reprise the role. “I felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested.”

So why didn’t Eisenberg return? According to Sorkin, the actor simply no longer wanted to be associated with Mark Zuckerberg. “He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy. He doesn’t like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say ‘I’m CEO, bitch’ for him to sign.”
