The Grudge reboot officially set for summer 2019

Halloween may seem like the logical time to put out a horror movie, but movies like THE CONJURING and last year’s ANNABELLE: CREATION and IT have proven otherwise. Summertime (or close to it) is prime horror season, with people wanting to mix their sunshine and beach vibes with pure, abject terror. The upcoming reboot of THE GRUDGE will take a page out of this book as it’s now official the movie will be part of next year’s summer season.

With production set to begin sometime next month, news has come out that the movie will be released on August 16, 2019. The film has a great cast, including Andrea Riseborough, John Cho, Demian Bichir, and Lin Shaye, with Nicholas Pesce directing.

As for what we know about the story, we know it won’t have anything to do with past versions of the American remakes (based on the Japanese film, JU-ON), and will be an entirely new story. Producer Sam Raimi said in the past the movie will explore “American suburbia,” differing from the Japanese settings of the past. Pesce also said in an interview in February that the movie will be “darker, grittier, and more realistic” (via ScreenDaily)

The 2004 GRUDGE starring Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the most terrifying experiences I’ve ever had in a movie theater, as the movie was perfect horror fodder for a 12-year-old boy. I actually haven’t seen the movie in about a decade, so lord knows if it holds up, but the whole franchise, and films like it (like THE RING), are in serious need of an update if they are to compete in this new era of fantastic horror movies. I guess in a year and a half we will see if this movie brings wet demon girls back into the mainstream.

The new GRUDGE movie is set for August 16, 2019.
